I usually recommend buying a handmade hoop on Etsy in whatever size you’re comfortable with! It’s good to practice with lots of different sizes.
Here’s a good article about hoop size: http://www.hooping.org/2011/02/hoop-size-demystified/

A kind stranger caught me hooping at the GoogaMooga food festival this past Saturday! I love the commentary. And yes, my boyfriend is very used to this by now. :)
Yay! Your movements will definitely get smoother with more practice, learning to keep it up there is the hardest part. And no worries, I love the hoop questions! For the legs to waist, it takes just a couple bumps up with your leg, and then once you get the hoop back to about mid-thigh it’s mostly a hip and butt wiggling motion! You can practice letting the hoop move down and back up your waist/hip/butt area without going all the way down to your legs, and that should probably help get used to the kind of motions you have to do after you bump up the hoop from your knees. This is sort of hard to describe, but I hope that helps you!
